How Arthur Lost 118 Pounds

Weight Loss

The Holiday Season is rapidly approaching and there will be so many delicious foods and drinks to sample. However, my family has a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. Yes, the top four diseases that kill in America run through my bloodline. This is why it was so important for me to help Arthur achieve healthy eating habits early on; because I didn’t want to see him experiencing what my parents did due to their severe weight problems.

My mother currently suffers from elevated blood pressure levels and she’s endured five strokes during her lifetime. My grandmother died from a stroke and was paralyzed on her left-side during her last years of life. I’ve had my ups and downs with weight issues over the past few years, but I’ve decided not to let food control me any longer. Recently, I lost fifteen pounds and Arthur has shed over 118 pounds over the last fourteen months. Arthur and I shop at Trader Joe’s and we stay away from fried foods. Calorie counting is crucial and exercise is necessary so that as the weight is coming off, your skin maintains its natural elasticity.

This is our typical grocery list of item we purchase from Trader Joe’s:

Sockeye Salmon – Wild Alaskan Salmon Fillets
Organic carrots – cut and peeled
Potatoes
Organic Milk
Wheat bread – no high fructose corn syrup, fat-free, organic
Spaghetti – 100% Organic durum wheat semolina (Cholesterol free, vegan, allergen)
Whole Wheat Pretzel Sticks
Organic Frosted Toaster Pastries – (Cherry Pomegranate is my favorite)
Organic White Corn Tortilla Chips
Salsa – made with fresh chile peppers
Boneless Smoked Turkey Breasts (Fat free, no antibiotics, no nitrates, vegetarian fed, no msg)
Water – must drink plenty of water

During the week, Arthur and I live off turkey sandwiches and drink lots of water. We snack on carrots and tortilla chips. However, we eat low-sodium tortilla chips and pair them up with Trader Joe’s salsa. Whole wheat pretzels are also an alternative snack, if you prefer crunchy snacks like we do. Gotta have the crunch!!! Trader Joe’s also has a large variety of unsalted nuts – pecans, pistachios, cashews – take your pick. Nuts make for a great snack.

We usually have grilled or baked salmon for dinner with a baked potato (no butter, no salt). Without Trader Joe’s and the great food they offer, I’m not sure if Arthur would have been able to lose all the weight he’s lost. He didn’t have any HCG injections, no miracle diet pills – because those things are only temporary. Anyone can lose weight – it’s all in the mind. Don’t let your mind play tricks on you and start eating a healthy diet. Stick to low-fat, low-calorie foods and splurge a little during the Holidays, because we do. Live a little, but don’t overdo it.
