Natalie – Are You Serious…Yoga?

I received an email from a woman named Natalie of Arlington, Virginia who claims she’s a “reformed” Helicopter Mom.  I wondered, How can one reform once she is categorized as over-obsessive, overbearing, overprotective, super controlling and just plan evil? Natalie claims she used to be just like me.  How sweet.

Natalie said she has a son Scott – her only child and when Scott went off to college, she nearly lost her mind.  No Kidding????  Natalie went on to say, “I was able to deal with him growing up, getting married and moving to California by doing yoga”.  You don’t say?

Yoga?  I really don’t know if yoga can reform folks like me, but maybe I’ll give it a try.

Are You Teaching Your Kids Healthy Eating Habits?

I must admit my favorite snacks are yummy and sweet donuts.  But, since my son starting dieting over one year ago – I have really tried to cut back on high-calorie snacks.  My son recently lost over 100 pounds (he did this over the past 13 months) and he’s still losing.  He’s reached his goal and now he plans to exceed his initial weight-loss goal by twenty pounds.  I am so proud of him, because at age 17 he’s finally made up his mind that he no longer wants to feel uncomfortable in his own skin.

As mothers, we must teach our kids healthy eating.  Kids will do everything they see us (as parents) do…it’s called imitating. If our kids see us eating healthy, low-calorie foods then hopefully they will follow in our footsteps.  Diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, strokes – all of these things and more can occur when our kids are overweight.  Let’s love our children and stay away from the foods that lead to health problems later in life.

Eating Disorders

I have had an eating disorder all my life. My weight has fluctuated up and down over the years. Recently I joined a gym and I am working out daily by jogging three miles each day. As we moms get older, we have to work twice as hard to maintain a healthy weight.

Now that my son is back in school, it’s time for me to start taking better care of myself.  I actually made an appointment to see my doctor next week for my annual pap smear.  As we women get older, we need to pay closer attention to those slight body aches and pains.  What may seem like a slight headache, could actually turn out to be something serious, like a brain tumor.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that when you get close to forty, it’s time to eat healthy, exercise daily and keep those annual check ups.  Mammograms are also crucial at this stage in life. My best friend hasn’t had a mammogram in three years.  I told her she’d better do it soon, before she regrets it.

Anyhow, this is a great time for Moms to take some Mommy time.  Go to a day spa and spoil yourself with a nice back massage, manicure, pedicure – heck the works.  You are worth it.  I am hoping that all tests result in an all clear status.  But, you just never know.
